My name is Jeannie Rice, and I hold multiple world records ranging from 1500 meters on the track to marathons. I’ve been running continuously for 42 years, setting around 10 records. Unlike many women who start running at a young age and then pause to focus on family, I began running around 1983 after having children at 35, which allowed me to keep going without interruption. What began as an effort to shed a few pounds led me to my first marathon in 1984 and eventually to iconic races like the Boston Marathon. Running has become an integral part of my life, with over 1000 races and 135 marathons under my belt.
Motivated by realizing I could compete and excel in my age division, I started breaking world record times and used the names and times of other runners as inspiration, displayed prominently on my refrigerator. Determination and hard work have been key to my success, pushing me to constantly improve. Despite having run countless races, I vividly remember each marathon, including memorable moments like breaking a 5-year-old record in the Chicago Marathon at the age of 70.
As I aged, I continued to challenge myself, smashing my own records year after year. In 2019, I set a record at the Berlin Marathon, running faster than ever before despite getting older. My mantra has always been that age shouldn’t limit your potential; in fact, you can get faster as you grow older. My consistency in running 50 miles a week for over four decades has been a crucial factor in my success.
I follow a strict training routine, including speed work, easy runs, tempo runs, and long runs throughout the week. By increasing my mileage when preparing for marathons and incorporating different types of shoes into my training, I’ve been able to maintain peak performance. While I focus on maintaining a healthy diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and rice, my weakness lies in my love for cheese. During races, I rely on gels and water to keep me fueled and hydrated.
Beyond the physical aspect, running has enriched my social life and allowed me to connect with people from around the globe. Being a source of inspiration to others and encouraging people of all ages to pursue their fitness goals brings me immense joy. I firmly believe that it’s never too late to start running or engaging in any form of exercise, emphasizing the importance of dedication, discipline, and determination in achieving success. As I continue to break records and inspire others, I hope to instill the belief that age should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s passions and leading a healthy lifestyle.
