Greetings, Lucia! It’s a shame London’s lacking sunshine these days while you’re all covered up. Despite being the sunniest spot in England, how are you finding your time in London? It’s great to be back. I do miss soaking up the sun in Barcelona, but it’s making a comeback. How does the food compare between London and Barcelona? I’ve heard you have a personal chef making waves on social media. Yes, I enjoy going the extra mile, so she’s currently preparing everything for my return home. She’s a true professional. Let’s catch up, we have a lot to discuss. We’ll delve into something more personal that has been a part of your life for years but went unnoticed until recently. Four years ago, I underwent a test and discovered that I have autism. Oddly enough, it was something I always sensed in a way. I remember being treated differently when I was younger due to my behavior. The diagnosis also revealed I have ADHD, which is common for neurodiverse individuals as traits often overlap. In my case, my mind is always racing, making sleep a challenge. I even consulted a sleep expert who suggested writing down my thoughts before bed, but my mind was too active for that. Another significant trait is always being steps ahead of others, which sometimes led to misunderstandings. My hyperfocus lies in football, where my passion borders on obsession, a characteristic of my autism. People often notice me fidgeting with my hair, a calming mechanism I unconsciously employ. Have you ever felt the need to mask your true self to fit in? Absolutely. In my twenties, I mimicked others’ behaviors to blend in. When I first arrived in England, I was reserved until I felt comfortable with certain individuals. Over time, I’ve improved, but certain social interactions like hugging and maintaining eye contact remain uncomfortable for me. Do your teammates at England and Chelsea know about your diagnosis? Some do. When I shared my diagnosis with close ones, their reactions were mostly unsurprised, as they accepted me for who I am. As for medication, I know there are options for ADHD, but I’ve chosen not to pursue them. I believe my uniqueness has contributed to my success in football, and exercise serves as a beneficial outlet for my condition. Feeling more at ease with yourself, are you now ready to openly discuss your experiences? Absolutely. A decade ago, I wouldn’t have been prepared for this conversation. Over the past five years, I’ve become more comfortable with myself, focusing on what feels right for me. Embracing my individuality has empowered me to share my story and inspire others to do the same. Moving forward, I will be an ambassador for the National Autistic Society, aiming to raise awareness and eliminate stigma surrounding autism, a cause close to my heart. My goal is to ensure no child faces the same misunderstandings I did growing up. Your courage and openness are truly inspiring, both on and off the field. Thank you for sharing your journey, as it will undoubtedly impact many lives positively.
