Alyssa Liu reflects on her skating journey, sharing insights on overcoming nerves, balancing hard work with joy, and the legacy she hopes to leave in the sport.

Return to the electrifying moment when you conclude your performance, hand raised high. The audience erupts in cheers. What emotions are swirling within you at that instant? “I was still immersed in the performance. It was truly incredible. The crowd’s energy was infectious, and that’s why I love to skate.” Do nerves ever get to you, or do you exude the same Alyssa Liu vibe effortlessly? “Not really. After all I’ve been through as a skater, it’s hard to be nervous. When people talk about the pressure athletes face, I believe that joy and freedom are my secret weapons.” How do you manage to tune out the noise and distractions? “I prioritize my peace and spend time with my loved ones. I’ve learned to say no and limit my online presence to block out the noise.” Aspiring skaters look up to you and want to replicate your success. How do you balance hard work with fun? “I enjoy pushing myself but also understand the need for rest. By putting myself in various situations, I can gauge my limits.” Reflecting on your journey, what’s the most crucial lesson you’ve learned since returning to skating? “I’ve learned so much that it’s difficult to summarize, but hopefully, one day I can share my experiences in detail.” If winning medals isn’t your main goal, how do you wish to be remembered in the sport? “I want my story to inspire others and break barriers. I hope my programs, style, and overall approach leave a lasting legacy.” To young skaters aspiring to follow in your footsteps, what advice do you offer? “Be yourself. Take inspiration but carve your own path. Spending time alone has been beneficial for me.” Looking back at your past struggles, what message would you convey to your younger self? “I wouldn’t change a thing. My younger self will find her way, and I embrace that journey.” How will you celebrate once the dust settles? “Every day is a celebration for me. I find joy in my life’s journey.” If your story were to be shared, what would the title of the book or movie be? “I haven’t settled on a title yet, but there’s time.”
