Starting at 35, Jeannie Rice transformed her life through running. With 10 records and 135 marathons, her journey from motherhood to marathon champion showcases the power of passion and perseverance.

I am Jeannie Rice, a record-breaking runner with achievements ranging from 1500 meters on the track to marathons. Over my 42 years of non-stop running, I’ve secured around 10 records. Unlike many women who start running at a young age, get married, and have children, I began my running journey in 1983 at the age of 35, already a mother. What initially started as a means to shed a few pounds quickly evolved into a passion that has defined my life. Since my first marathon in 1984 and my inaugural Boston Marathon in 1985, running has become an integral part of my daily routine. With 135 marathons under my belt and approximately 1000 races completed, I’ve continuously pushed myself to beat my own records. Motivated by the idea of winning my division in races, I set world record times that inspired me to keep improving. Even as I aged, I found myself running faster than before, breaking records and setting new personal bests. The sight of names and times of competitors on my fridge served as a constant reminder of the goals I aimed to achieve. Determination has always been my driving force, pushing me to work relentlessly towards my ambitions. Memories of each marathon I’ve conquered remain vivid in my mind, especially standout performances like breaking a 5-year-old record at the Chicago Marathon when I was 70. Subsequent achievements, such as finishing the Berlin Marathon in 3:24 a year later, showcased that age is no barrier to speed. My 2019 record of 3:24 in Berlin, where I improved my time despite getting older, stands as a testament to the fact that age can bring about unexpected improvements in performance. Transitioning to my 1975 record of 3:33 in London marked another milestone in my running journey. Continuously learning and adapting, I strive to challenge myself with each race, always aiming to surpass my previous accomplishments. While some records may eventually be broken by others, the thrill of chasing my own achievements keeps me motivated to push my limits further. Maintaining a rigorous training schedule has been key to my success. Running 50 miles per week consistently for over 40 years forms the foundation of my training routine. When preparing for marathons, I increase my mileage to 60-70 miles per week, ensuring that I am always in peak physical condition. Although I never had a formal coach, I’ve developed a deep understanding of my body’s capabilities and limitations through self-coaching. My diet plays a crucial role in supporting my running endeavors, with a focus on healthy eating habits such as consuming plenty of vegetables, fruits, and rice. While I indulge in cheese occasionally, I avoid fried and fatty foods to maintain optimal performance during races. Fueling my body with energy gels and staying hydrated with water throughout races helps sustain my endurance levels. Beyond the physical aspects of running, I find immense joy in the social connections and experiences that come with the sport. Meeting fellow runners from diverse backgrounds and sharing the camaraderie of running events enriches my overall running experience. Being able to inspire others through my journey and hearing words of encouragement from fellow runners fuels my passion for the sport. As I continue to lace up my shoes and hit the pavement, I embrace the mantra that it’s never too late to start pursuing your passions. Whether you’re in middle age or beyond, the benefits of running extend far beyond physical fitness, offering a sense of community and personal fulfillment. Through dedication, discipline, and determination, anyone can embark on their own running journey and discover the transformative power of this enduring sport.
